REDBULL YOUTH AMERICA'S CUP KICKS OFF
The Redbull Youth America’s Cup is under way. The AC45’s hit the water with much anticipation and these young guns battling it out around the short course is proving to be a spectacle worth watching. We have seen 4 thrilling races so far, each one with its share of close calls, aggressive sailing and technical mishaps. There has been a different winner for each race, showing that it’s anyone’s title to take home, but consistency counts for everything and Zhik has 3 of its 4 teams at the top of the leader board. It’s going to be a great series and we can’t wait so see how things unfold next...
RICHARD HEWSON
To say Australian Richard Hewson is addicted to sailing would be an understatement. Richard has been sailing all his life and most recently smashed records in the 40,000 nautical mile Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Skippering and navigating the Dubois 68, Gold Coast Australia, in the ten strong fleet, Richard scored podium positions in all 15 legs of the race, winning an astonishing 12 races, and in some cases beating the rest of the fleet into port by over 24 hours...
LUCINDA WHITTY
Lucinda began sailing at the age of five and first represented Australia at the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney in 2007. She became a World Champion two years later as a part of the crew that won the 2009 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship. After spending some time away from the Match Racing circuit Lucinda returned in 2011 and in the middle of that year teamed up with Olivia Price and Nina Curtis. London 2012 was Lucinda’s first Olympic Games appearance...
OLIVIA PRICE & NINA CURTIS
Olivia is the skipper of Australia’s Women’s Match Racing crew and the youngest Australian sailor at London 2012, having turned 20 during the Games. Olivia began her campaign to London 2012 as a crew, having success at the 2010 Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth. In 2011 Olivia turned her focus to skippering, teaming up with Nina Curtis and Lucinda Whitty. The young crew has hit their stride this year, finishing on the podium at three World Cup events, including a breakthrough win in Weymouth. ELISE RECHICHI & SARAH COOK
Elise was one of the youngest Australian sailors at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games but showed maturity beyond her years, mastering the challenging conditions to win gold in the 470 women alongside Tessa Parkinson. Elise and Tessa had sailed together since the youth level, winning gold at the 2004 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship. Elise took some time away from sailing post Beijing, gaining her commercial pilot’s license, before teaming up with Belinda Stowell at the end of 2011. The pair won their first regatta together, Sail Melbourne, before going on to finish ninth at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships...
