Mathew made his Olympic Games debut at London 2012 alongside Malcolm Page, with the pair winning gold in the 470 men's class. The gold medal came off the back of an amazing year where they won two World Championships and won eight straight regattas. London 2012 was a long time coming for Belcher who narrowly missed out on selection for Beijing 2008 to eventual gold medalists Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page. Belcher won his first World Championship back in 2000, sailing alongside brother Daniel at the 420 World Championship. The Queenslander holds a black belt in Taekwondo and is a talented golfer. Mathew is married to German sailor Rike Belcher who competed in the 470 women’s class at London 2012.

After London 2012 Belcher teamed up with Will Ryan, a talented young sailor who has easily proven he has what it takes to sail with the Olympic Medalist. In only a year the duo has racked up an impressive tally of 17 straight regatta wins, capping it all off in 2013 by winning the 470 World Championships. There seems to be nothing that Belcher and now Ryan can’t do.
