The Making Waves Regatta took place on Sydney Harbour Friday 5th March with 11 teams competing to raise much needed funds for the Foundation’s many programs. After much organisation to comply with COVID-19 restriction, the day went off with great success.
The Making Waves Foundation (previously known as Sailors with disABILITIES) was founded in 1994 with the 50th Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which marked the first time a fully disabled crew had ever sailed in an ocean race.
Since then, the Foundation has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people through specially tailored sailing programs.
By developing participants’ confidence and team skills, the Foundation helps people meet life’s challenges with determination and optimism.
Foundation board member and Interim CEO Clive Hassett explains why the Regatta is such a vital part of the organisation’s busy calendar.
“At the end of the day the most important thing for us, is that this is a big fundraising day to make sure we have the finances we need to put our programs out there. It’s also about trying to build what I would call a Making Waves Community,” said Hassett.
“The event gives us an opportunity to work with our corporate supporters to show them where their generosity goes and what it enables us to do. It’s important to show our supporters the difference they make to the people who enter our program, how it improves their prospects in life and the way that they personally developed through the Making Waves program.”
The Zhik brand, for many years, have been pushing the boundaries in sailing but also where possible looking to give back to the community and open opportunities for inclusion in the sport. “The Zhik team have partnered with the Making Waves Foundation for a few years now but are looking to get more involved. We see the amazing work that is being undertaken at the Making Waves Foundation to support and improve the lives of disadvantaged and disabled people and want to be part of that journey,” said Zhik CEO Piet Poelmann
“The Making Waves Regatta was a great day out on the water for all involved. It’s a day when we can all unite for a great cause, have a bit of fun, but more importantly raise awareness and funds for all the work and amazing initiatives that they undertake. Our Zhik team who were out racing were able to take the win in Division B which was a bonus, although we are just happy to support such a great organisation.”
