At 29 years of age Tom is already one of Australia’s most decorated sailors. Tom has dominated the Laser class in recent years, winning five of the last six World Championships, including the last three in a row. Tom created history at London 2012, winning Australia's first ever individual sailing gold medal. Tom was at the front of the fleet from day one of the regatta and was secured at least a silver medal before the final medal race event began.

Tom's first Olympic experience was at Beijing 2008 where he went into racing as reigning World Champion and favourite but had a poor regatta, finishing 22nd.

After taking some time away from sailing Tom set his sights on London and hasn’t looked back since, regaining his world number one ranking, winning the 2010, 2011 and 2012 World Championships and becoming the first Australian to be named ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year in 2010.

Tom was the tactician aboard the America's Cup winning Oracle Team USA in 2013, and remains on board for the defence of the cup in Bermuda in 2017.
